SUMMARY OR PURPOSE

Intervene in young people’s lives to help them make better decisions, learn that we care for them, and help them find out that life can be better if we obey the law, and experience life without drugs, alcohol, and other addictive, destructive habits. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Meet with clients one-on-one to get to know each client and go through court order(s). Teach clients using the Navigator program and other materials to help clients learn how to make the best choices. Optional duties, depending on funding, interest level of youth, if equipment is available, and knowledge and interest of counselor.

  • Teach clients how to play hockey, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
  • Teach clients to sew, bake, or cook. Take clients hunting.
  • Juvenile Court Counselor Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and process complaints/allegations of delinquent and undisciplined behavior and help determine appropriate courses of action.
  • Assess the risks and needs of the juvenile in order to provide for the security and safety of the community and the juvenile’s well-being
  • Develop diversion plans for those youth whose risk levels and needs can be met through alternative measures without formal court intervention
  • Make recommendations to court based on assessments, which can include secure detention, if warranted
  • Provide case management as part of supervision for youths on probation to assure the delivery of appropriate services while assuring compliance with court orders
  • Provide aftercare, case management and post-release supervision to juveniles returning to the community following a commitment to a youth development center.

Juvenile Court Counselors work directly with youth and their families, providing counseling and intervention services. Court counselors have daily opportunities to help troubled youth succeed. Our court counselors have a wide range of responsibilities as they guide youths through the juvenile justice system.

Able to teach and help students complete the Navigator curricula,

Care about young people’s lives

Available to listen to and counsel young people as needed.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS

Current Alaska’s driver’s license.

No criminal offenses involving children.

Background check required before working.

Undergraduate degree and experience in counseling preferred.
